Bergamo: Ederson remains unsure about collapsed Manchester United transfer
Brazilian midfielder Ederson has expressed his confusion regarding the collapse of his potential transfer to Manchester United earlier this summer. Despite an agreement reportedly being reached between Atalanta and the Premier League club for a fee around €45m, the move did not materialise. Ederson was expected to finalise the transfer after his participation in the 2026 World Cup with Brazil.
Speaking ahead of a Conference League play-off match against Hapoel Tel-Aviv, Ederson indicated he is still unaware of the specific reasons for the transfer’s failure. He mentioned that he had interest from other clubs but ultimately chose to remain with Atalanta, a club he feels truly wanted him. He stated, “I am very happy to remain with Atalanta. I really thank the club and Luca Percassi. They called me many times, and I felt they were by my side.”
Medical examination and club commitment
The decision to abandon the transfer surprised many, especially given Ederson’s consistent performance in Serie A. Reports suggested that Manchester United flagged knee issues during his medical examination, leading to the deal’s collapse. However, Ederson signed an extension with Atalanta until 2031 following this, and he maintains that his medical tests went well.
“I honestly don’t know what happened. I always had interest from other clubs, and I could’ve gone to another English side. The tests went well; I don’t know what changed. I’ve been with Atalanta for four years and always played,” the midfielder explained. He further noted that his strong relationship with Atalanta convinced him to stay and sign a new contract, rather than waiting to see what might happen.
Despite the disappointment of the failed move, Ederson has refocused on his responsibilities with Maurizio Sarri‘s team. He made 41 appearances for Atalanta across all competitions last season, contributing three goals and two assists. He also featured twice as a substitute for Brazil in the World Cup against Haiti and Norway. He is now considered a primary candidate for the captain’s armband at Atalanta.
Atalanta’s perspective and future plans
Atalanta director Cristiano Giuntoli has described Ederson as their “best new signing” of the summer, highlighting the club’s appreciation for his commitment. Ederson’s decision to extend his contract at the Gewiss Stadium provides a boost for the team. He expressed his gratitude to the fans, stating, “I thank the fans; they are always so passionate and stand by you, in good and bad moments.”
Meanwhile, Manchester United has reportedly shifted its focus to other midfield targets. According to reports, the club is now pursuing Carlos Baleba from Brighton. While an initial bid was rejected, sources indicate that a deal for Baleba is expected to be completed. Personal terms with Baleba were reportedly agreed upon last summer, and he has been keen to join United since August 2025.
Manchester United had previously secured the signings of Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans in mid-July. These additions aim to bolster the team’s midfield depth for the upcoming 2026/27 campaign, which includes participation in the Premier League and Champions League. Ederson’s commitment to Atalanta was solidified with his new contract, which extends until 2031.
