Chelsea’s Palmer finds form again, new manager Alonso outlines plans

'Sensational' Palmer 'hungry' again

Palmer’s Resurgence and Managerial Vision

Cole Palmer has shown renewed vigour, contributing to Chelsea’s recent performance against Fulham. His involvement led to the team’s fastest goal since October 2016, with Joao Pedro scoring just 31 seconds into the match. Palmer’s pass set up Pedro, who lifted his shot over goalkeeper Bernd Leno. This display follows a period of frustration for Palmer, marked by a groin issue that affected his initial impact at Stamford Bridge. Despite this, he matched his previous season’s Premier League assist tally in the recent game.

Palmer’s creativity and work rate were evident throughout the match, reminiscent of his form during his first season with Chelsea and his performance in last year’s Club World Cup final against Paris St-Germain. He expressed feeling refreshed after a summer break, stating, “Over the summer I rested, I recharged and, yeah, I’m ready and I’m hungry.” He is now within two goals of reaching 50 Premier League goals. Former Manchester United defender Gary Neville described Palmer’s performance as “sensational” and “unbelievable to watch,” highlighting the strong attacking trio of Palmer, Morgan Rogers, and Joao Pedro.

New Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso has outlined his approach for the team, focusing on adaptability and developing the team’s “soul.” Alonso, who joined Chelsea this summer, will manage club-record signing Morgan Rogers, who arrived from Aston Villa in a £117m move. Rogers, 24 years old, scored in an unofficial debut during a friendly against Real Sociedad. Questions had arisen about how Rogers would integrate into Alonso’s system, particularly given Chelsea’s recent emphasis on possession football compared to Villa’s more direct style.

Alonso’s Tactical Flexibility and Team Spirit

Alonso addressed concerns about player compatibility, including the relationship between Rogers and Palmer, both of whom share similar playing styles. Rogers had previously expressed enthusiasm for playing alongside his England teammate. Alonso emphasised his flexible managerial style, stating that the team must be adaptable to different game demands. He believes that while a plan and style are important, the ability to adjust is crucial for competitiveness. “You have a plan, you have an idea, you have a style, but sometimes the game demands something different,” Alonso said, adding that understanding and adapting would lead to more wins.

The manager’s plans extend to getting the best out of Palmer, who has faced challenges since his strong debut season in London. Alonso described Palmer as “very analytical” and “smart,” noting that he is enjoying working with the player. He believes Palmer understands concepts quickly, even with minimal explanation. Alonso’s preference for a three-man defence, a formation he utilised during his unbeaten domestic season with Bayer Leverkusen in 2023/24, has been a topic of discussion during Chelsea’s pre-season. While he has reverted to this approach in recent preparations, he stressed that he would not be rigidly committed to one formation.

Alonso’s primary focus is on cultivating the team’s spirit and connection. He views the “soul of the team” and “team spirit” as paramount, believing that a strong collective energy will be the team’s greatest strength. He acknowledged that building this takes time but expressed confidence in the progress already made. The manager highlighted the importance of focusing on these aspects for improvement. The upcoming match against Fulham, scheduled for Monday, will be broadcast live from 6:30 pm, with kick-off at 8 pm.
