Inter coach discusses Lautaro Martinez’s future amid Barcelona links
Inter Milan coach Cristian Chivu has addressed speculation surrounding the future of captain Lautaro Martinez, stating his belief that the forward will remain with the club for an extended period. This comes amidst reports linking Martinez with a move to Barcelona, particularly after the Catalan club’s pursuit of Julian Alvarez from Atletico Madrid encountered difficulties.
Chivu acknowledged the frequent transfer rumours that emerge at this time of year, expressing satisfaction that such discussions highlight the high regard in which Inter’s players are held. He emphasised Martinez’s importance to the team, citing his role as captain and his recent achievements, including winning the World Cup in 2022 and participating in a recent final. Chivu affirmed that Inter is determined to retain Martinez, viewing him as central to the club’s future aspirations.
Inter’s Season Outlook and Squad Changes
Ahead of their Serie A season opener against Monza at the San Siro, Chivu declared that Inter is prepared to be “the team to beat.” He stressed the importance of starting fresh and maintaining competitiveness, noting that the team’s ability to sustain its performance level in recent years provides a strong foundation. The coach highlighted the need for determination, hunger, and humility, along with a focus on continuous development.
When asked about potential rivals, Chivu confidently stated that Inter fears no team, whether domestically or in Europe. He underscored that every team begins the season on equal footing and that past achievements should not lead to complacency. He also mentioned that the team’s status has not drastically changed over the past year, acknowledging that every season presents both challenges and opportunities for growth.
The summer transfer window saw several changes for Inter. The club signed Dedryck Spence from Tottenham to replace Denzel Dumfries, who departed. Chivu cautioned against direct comparisons between Spence and Dumfries, explaining that Spence was chosen for his unique attributes and his potential for development within a team aiming for dominance. Other notable arrivals from the English Premier League include John Stones and Curtis Jones. Chivu expressed his satisfaction with these new additions, noting that he had spoken with Jones prior to his arrival and that all three players possess qualities that will enhance the squad’s level.
Jones’s transfer from Liverpool was finalised this week, with the midfielder replacing Davide Frattesi, who moved to Lazio. Stones, a former Manchester City defender, scored in a friendly against Real Betis, while Spence is set to make his league debut against Monza. These signings mark a growing English presence within the Inter squad, bringing the total number of English players signed by the club this summer to three. Historically, Inter has had only three English players in its more than 100-year history: Gerry Hitchens, Paul Ince, and Ashley Young.
Monza’s Preparations for the Season Opener
Monza, Inter’s opponent for the Serie A opener, faces significant challenges as they prepare for their return to the league. Coach Ivan Juric indicated that the team is dealing with a “major emergency” due to both injuries and ongoing transfer market activities. The midfield, in particular, has been affected by several absences, including captain Pessina, Ciurria, Colombo, Akinsanmiro, and recent signing Idrissa Tourè.
Juric may need to reconfigure his midfield, potentially starting with a creative pairing of Mout and Foe Ondoa. The match at San Siro could also influence Monza’s transfer market dealings, with discussions reportedly underway for Inter talents Asllani and Massolin, as well as Michael Folorunsho from Napoli. The squad remains incomplete, with work still needed in various positions, including goalkeeper and defence. Pizzignacco is expected to play in goal, while reinforcements for the defence, such as Kouadio from Fiorentina, are being sought. The attacking department also requires attention, with Varela as the sole number nine following Petagna’s sale to Pisa.
The 2026/27 Serie A season is scheduled to commence on Saturday at 6:30 PM.
