Liverpool’s interest in PSG winger Ibrahim Mbaye explained as Reds prioritise another target
Liverpool has been linked with Paris Saint-Germain winger Ibrahim Mbaye, but reports suggest the club’s interest is not as advanced as previously thought. French journalist Romain Molina indicated that while Mbaye is on Liverpool’s shortlist, he is not the primary target in the final phase of the summer transfer window.
Molina explained that Mbaye’s future might be influenced more by his agent, Jorge Mendes, rather than a direct push from the Premier League side. Mendes is reportedly looking to leverage his connections with clubs to facilitate a move for Mbaye by the end of the transfer window.
Prioritising another target
The situation with Mbaye contrasts with Liverpool’s pursuit of his teammate, Bradley Barcola. Liverpool appears to be prioritising a deal for Barcola. Molina noted that Mendes’ influence with the Anfield club is not the main factor in this specific instance, particularly given the figures being quoted by the French champions for Mbaye.
Molina highlighted the difference between Mendes’ approach and that of Barcola’s representative, Moussa Sissoko. Sissoko is described as someone who prioritises his players’ wishes, even if it means clashing with clubs, while Mendes is said to focus on his connections with executives to make transfers happen.
Reports from Fabrizio Romano suggest that Liverpool withdrew their interest in Mbaye after holding discussions with Mendes. The club reportedly deemed the asking price too high, especially when considering a potential joint transfer for both Barcola and Mbaye.
Manchester United has also been linked with an interest in Mbaye and has reportedly made contact regarding a possible transfer. Other clubs, including Bayern Munich, Porto, RB Leipzig, Bayer Leverkusen, Borussia Dortmund, Roma, and Aston Villa, have also shown interest in the player.
Alternative options and financial considerations
Should a move for Mbaye not materialise, Liverpool has other options under consideration. The recruitment team has been tracking Brighton’s Yankuba Minteh, Lille’s Matias Fernandez-Pardo, and Bournemouth’s Rayan as potential additions to the wide positions. Another player who has recently emerged as a target is Koln’s Said El Mala. The versatile forward, who can play on either flank or through the middle, was previously linked with Borussia Dortmund, but reports indicate the Bundesliga giants have withdrawn from the race. This could potentially clear the path for Liverpool if they decide to activate his reported release clause.
The prospect of acquiring two young stars from Paris Saint-Germain, Mbaye and Barcola, would involve significant financial outlay. Molina’s statements suggest that while Mbaye is being considered, the finances involved could lead Liverpool to look at other targets.
Mbaye made 31 appearances in all competitions last season, scoring three goals and providing two assists. Of these appearances, 11 were in the starting XI. He primarily plays on the right wing but can also operate on the left.
His playing time at PSG could be further reduced if the club completes a move for Ferran Torres from Barcelona. Torres, who can play across the front line, is reportedly close to joining PSG, which could increase competition for places in Luis Enrique’s squad. Spanish newspaper AS reported that the French champions might consider a loan move for Mbaye as a result.
Mbaye scored against Michael Carrick’s side in a pre-season friendly that ended 1-1. He was an unused substitute in PSG’s 2-1 European Super Cup win over Aston Villa.
Mbaye has made 41 appearances for PSG and scored for Senegal against France at the World Cup 2026. He became the youngest player to start a game for PSG when he lined up against Le Havre in August 2024. His goal against France also made him the youngest African to score at a World Cup.
With the transfer deadline approaching, Liverpool is working to finalise its attacking options.
