Rumesh Pathirage raises bar again, Neeraj Chopra braces for another test - The Times of India

Rumesh Tharanga Pathirage of Sri Lanka has further elevated his exceptional season, delivering a significant message to India’s Olympic and world champion, Neeraj Chopra, as both prepare for the Diamond League Final and the Asian Games. Pathirage’s recent performance in Zurich has solidified his status as a formidable competitor in men’s javelin.

In Zurich, Pathirage achieved a remarkable throw of 92.07m, underscoring his consistent excellence this season. This marks his second throw exceeding 92m in 2026, following his national record of 92.62m set in Rome in June, which also stands as the world-leading throw for the year. This achievement places Pathirage in an exclusive group of javelin throwers.

Pathirage joins elite javelin throwers

With his latest throw in Zurich, Pathirage has become only the fourth javelin thrower in history to surpass the 92m mark on two separate occasions. He now shares this distinction with legendary figures in the sport, including Jan Zelezny, Johannes Vetter, and Aki Parviainen. This accomplishment highlights the extraordinary trajectory of his 2026 campaign.

Pathirage’s performance in Zurich demonstrated his ability to build momentum throughout a competition. He commenced with an initial throw of 81.50m, subsequently improving to 88.23m in his second attempt. His third round saw him reach 89.90m. After a throw of 84.91m in the fourth round and a foul in the fifth, he delivered his decisive 92.07m throw on his final attempt, securing the victory.

The Zurich event saw Anderson Peters, a former world champion, secure second place with a season-best throw of 86.93m. Poland’s Dawid Wegner finished third, achieving a personal best of 85.16m.

A season of consistent victories

The victory in Zurich adds another significant chapter to Pathirage’s outstanding 2026 season. The 23-year-old athlete has now claimed victory in 11 of his 12 competitions this year, including a streak of six consecutive wins. His successful run began after his record-breaking performance in Rome.

Following his win in Rome, Pathirage secured victories in Ostrava and at the Doha Diamond League. He then made history in Glasgow by becoming Sri Lanka’s first Commonwealth Games javelin champion. His impressive form continued at the Lausanne Diamond League, where he narrowly defeated Chopra with a throw of 88.14m, just nine centimetres further than Chopra’s 88.05m, which was the Indian’s best effort of the season.

Chopra, a two-time Olympic medallist, did not participate in the Zurich event but has still qualified for the Diamond League Final in Brussels as the sixth-ranked thrower. The upcoming season-ending showdown, scheduled for September 4-5, is anticipated to feature another significant clash between Pathirage and Chopra.

Mounting pressure on Chopra

Pathirage’s consistent performances have intensified the focus on Neeraj Chopra. The Sri Lankan has already defeated Chopra on three occasions this year and is considered a strong contender for the Brussels final. His emergence has reshaped the landscape of men’s javelin, transforming him into the benchmark for the event.

The challenge for Chopra is clear: Pathirage is no longer merely an emerging talent. With his demonstrated consistency, impressive distances, and remarkable winning streak, the Sri Lankan has established himself as the athlete to beat. The Zurich results further reinforced this message, placing increased pressure on Chopra as they head into crucial competitions.

The rivalry between Pathirage and Chopra is expected to gain even more significance in the near future. Following the Diamond League Final in Brussels, both athletes are set to compete at the Asian Games, where their encounters could become season-defining contests for both competitors.
