Mackay: Shoriful Islam eyes return as Bangladesh target historic Test series win
Shoriful Islam, the Bangladesh pace bowler, has recovered from a hamstring injury and is now available for selection in the second Test against Australia in Mackay. His return could bolster Bangladesh’s bowling options as they aim for a historic series victory. The second Test is scheduled to take place from August 22 to 26 at the Great Barrier Reef Arena.
Islam missed the first Test in Darwin but traveled to Australia and witnessed his teammates secure a nine-wicket victory at Marrara Stadium from August 13 to 17. This triumph marked Bangladesh’s first Test win on Australian soil, placing them in a strong position to claim the series with just a draw needed in the upcoming match.
Najmul Hossain Shanto, the captain, confirmed that Shoriful successfully passed his fitness test ahead of the Mackay Test. Speaking to reporters in Mackay on August 19, Shoriful expressed his readiness to play and accept any role within the squad.
Shoriful’s Readiness and Team Spirit
Despite being sidelined for the first Test, Shoriful Islam remained deeply connected to his team’s performance. He shared his sentiments about being part of the historic achievement, even from the sidelines. “I am always ready. Let’s see what is in my destiny, InshaAllah, and hopefully I can play the match,” Shoriful stated.
He further elaborated on his involvement during the Darwin match, stating, “I’m very happy to have been part of such a victory. At least I made it into the pictures (laughs), even though I wasn’t in the squad. It feels really good.” This highlights his emotional investment in the team’s success, even when he couldn’t actively participate on the field.
Islam’s commitment extended to actively supporting his teammates throughout the Darwin match. He revealed that he prayed for the players and celebrated their success as if he had played a direct role in the victory. “I always prayed for the players who were playing, that they would give their best and that we would win. When we won the match, I was happier than anyone else in Bangladesh,” he added.
Series Implications and Bowling Depth
Australia needs a victory in Mackay to level the two-match series. Conversely, Bangladesh requires only a draw to secure their maiden Test series triumph over the hosts. The availability of Shoriful Islam provides additional depth to Bangladesh’s pace-bowling options as they prepare for this crucial second Test.
The Bangladesh pace attack was instrumental in their Darwin triumph, with Hasan Mahmud taking nine wickets. All ten Australian wickets in the first innings fell to seamers, underscoring the effectiveness of Bangladesh’s fast bowlers. Shoriful, who is part of Bangladesh’s emerging pace group, now hopes to contribute to another historic moment for his team in Mackay.
His recovery from the hamstring injury, sustained during Bangladesh’s tour of Zimbabwe, has been positive, leading to his clearance for the second Test. Bangladesh arrived in Mackay after a journey from Darwin, with Shoriful hoping to make his return to the playing XI as the team looks to seal the series win.
The second Test at the Great Barrier Reef Arena will begin on Saturday, August 22.
