Sri Lanka tour: Morkel highlights key to success for India
India prepares for Sri Lanka Test series
India is set to face Sri Lanka in an upcoming Test series, aiming to improve its standing in the ICC World Test Championship Final race. The team began its campaign with a drawn away series in England but subsequently experienced a 2-0 home series loss to South Africa, which impacted their WTC points. Currently, India holds the fifth position in the standings with a point percentage of 48.15, while Sri Lanka is in sixth place with 41.67.
The tour is anticipated to present challenging bowling conditions, prompting India’s bowling coach, Morne Morkel, to discuss the potential for a spin-heavy attack. Morkel described their spin bowling strategy as a very attacking option. He suggested that this approach allows for pressure to be generated with seam bowling from one end, while spin bowlers can operate from the other.
Morkel’s insights on Sri Lankan conditions
Morkel, who played two Tests in Sri Lanka during his career, secured 12 wickets at an average of 16. His experience in the country provides him with a clear understanding of the local wickets. He believes the surfaces will be true wickets that will eventually offer turn as the Test matches progress. Morkel noted that the team has prepared for all potential challenges that may arise.
A significant difference for India compared to their home matches will be the use of the Kookaburra ball instead of their usual SG ball. Morkel explained that managing the Kookaburra ball on Sri Lankan pitches, especially given the heat and humidity, will be a key challenge for India’s pace contingent. He anticipates the Kookaburra ball will soften earlier, typically after 20-35 overs. The strategy will involve maintaining intensity and pressure even as the ball loses its hardness.
The pace attack for India includes Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, Auqib Nabi, and Gurnoor Brar. Siraj has 140 Test wickets, while Krishna has 25 wickets from seven Tests. Gurnoor and Auqib are uncapped. Morkel expressed confidence in the pacers, highlighting Gurnoor’s past success with the A side in similar conditions and the experience of Prasidh and Siraj in tough bowling conditions back home.
Morkel emphasised the importance of a quick assessment of conditions and the practical application of that understanding. He stressed the need for bowlers to be “street smart” in how they use the crease and their short balls, adapting quickly to various situations. During his playing days, Morkel was instrumental in a famous win in 2014, taking seven wickets, which contributed to South Africa winning the series.
Spin options and batting synergy
India is considering fielding three left-arm spinners in the first Test in Galle: Kuldeep Yadav, Ravindra Jadeja, and Manav Suthar. Morkel indicated that these bowlers offer diverse skills, forming an attacking combination. Kuldeep provides left-arm wrist spin and an attacking option, Jadeja is known for his accuracy, and Suthar bowls a more traditional left-arm spin. Morkel believes their varied approaches mean that having three left-arm spinners is not a major concern, as they possess the skill to secure 20 wickets.
The Galle pitch is also expected to support the decision to play multiple spinners, with conditions likely to become more favourable for spin as the match progresses. Morkel noted that historically, the venue has favoured such a strategy. The team has prepared for all eventualities, focusing on the mental challenge of batting time, bowling sustained spells, and hitting the right areas.
In addition to the spin options, India is also deciding on the second seamer to partner Mohammed Siraj, choosing between Gurnoor Brar and Prasidh Krishna. Both players have limited Test experience but are deemed ready if selected. Morkel also highlighted the crucial role of KL Rahul in the batting order. He expects Rahul’s experience and leadership at the top of the order to be vital for the team’s synergy and overall success, particularly in guiding younger players during preparations.
India’s first Test against Sri Lanka is scheduled to commence on 15 August.
